The Mars Volta - Frances The Mute

September 13th 2008 14:57
Ok so sorry it’s been a while. I’ve been busier than a one legged man in an ass whooping competition but don’t worry I’m going to get back into the reviews. In my downtime I’ve come up with an excellent selection of music that’s sure to tantalize your aural senses. I promise the new reviews will be much easier on the eyes too, since I’m now equipped with a flash new version of Microsoft Office that actually has a spell check on it.

So to kick things off again, I’ve chosen an album that’s sure not going to be everyone’s cup of tea. But if you really take the time to sit back and absorb the CD, you’ll come to realize that Frances The Mute by The Mars Volta is truly a spectacular album. The album is based on a diary found by former band member Jeremy Ward (Ward passed in 03’ from a heroin overdose). The diary detailed an orphans search for his biological parents and a collection of people who may have been able to help, subsequently some of the names found in the diary also make up the track listing for the album.

Ok so now that the history is out of the way let’s get into it. Frances The Mute is a chaotic beast of exhilarating transgression, time signatures that quite simply shouldn’t exist, multi lingual lyrics and surgically deconstructed frenzied guitars. It may seem like a lot to take in, but that’s because it is. At only five tracks and a run time of over 75 minutes it’s one hell of an ambitious album that really shows no compromise.

The opening track Cygnus.. Vismond Cygnus is possibly the closest thing I’ve ever heard to musical schizophrenia. Jumping from quiet acoustic guitars to a fusion of funk, jazz and rock only to break down and be reborn into a 29/16 time signature jazz-fusion crescendo and fades away again into a bombardment of ambience. Not all the tracks are like this though, each has it’s own unique identity and sound varying from the haunting space western ballad that is Miranda That Ghost Just Isn’t Holy Anymore to the epic jazz odyssey Cassandra Gemini. Each track fits together cohesively like a chapter in a narrative, and thus so the album benefits from being listened to from start to finish.

If you haven’t heard Frances The Mute before, check it out and prepare to visit a progressive aural soundscape unlike any other. It’s like a madman on acid is conducting the band except he knows exactly what he’s doing and so does the band. It’s truly epic.

I Dig It.

Of all the Nick Cave albums to review I chose his latest release Dig! Lazarus Dig! because I was inspired by Stephen King's Top 20 Best Songs Ever List ( for anyone who didn't read the article, he went through his Ipod and claimed his Top 20 Favourite songs were in fact the ones he'd listened to most on his iPod). When I searched through mine I found that this cd was at number 4 of the top cycled albums.

So how do I start to summise the awesomeness of this album? Well I'm not too sure if albums can take on scent characteristics, but this album just reeks of coolness. Nick Cave, blasts through this album with the sort of dark charisma that makes you wonder if Cave infact has possession of the Devils soul. Yeah he's that good. It's not just Cave that's a standout on this album either, The Bad Seeds match Cave's flair in spades. Everything from the subtle drumming and percussion on Moonland to the screeching guitarwork on Lie Down Here ( & Be My Girl ), The Bad Seeds show they're the perfect accompaniment for Caves vocal mastery.

This album is a good place to begin if your not familiar with any of Nick Cave & The Bad Seed's work. I mean seriously, how could an album with Nick Cave preaching about a Zombie Lazarus be bad?

Why Jack White Should Never Make Another White Stripes Album

I was a bit skeptical of the new Raconteurs album to be honest, it just seemed to jump out of nowhere and their debut album left me underwhelmed. The first thing I noticed listening to Consolers Of The Lonely is how well Brendon Benson and Jack White work together as a song writing duo. They bounce ideas back and fourth between each other with such a grace that it reminds me of Lennon and McCartney. While White Howls Benson Croons, creating a perfect balance to base the album upon.

The first track (which lends its name to the title of the cd )Consolers Of The Lonely is probably the best example of their songwriting talent together. Its a nice simple rockout featuring some sweet bluesy style call and response guitar licks between White and Benson. The awesome thing about this song is the way the guitar reflects which singer is taking the lead. While Benson sings the guitar is far more structured and tight to suit his style of singing where as when White takes the lead of singing the guitar falls back to the loose blues riff thats used as the introduction. Its an awesome technique that really helps accentuate the vocals and just shows how well these two work together as a duo.

I always found The White Stripes music to be lacking a certain dynamic that truly set it apart, sure Jack White came up with some bitchrod songs but he just sounds so much more comfortable and confident with a full band with him that it makes me wish he never does another White Stripes album again.

The New Raconteurs album Consolers Of The Lonely is a cd that just appeared and smacked me in my face with its pure greatness. It's one of the best alternative rock albums I've heard in a few years, give it a go. It won't be a waste of your time, these guys are true songwriters.

The Time For Reviews Has Come

May 26th 2008 03:45
I've got too much music, but now I've got the space to write about it

My theory is most people know nothing about good music. Evidence? Britney Spears can sell cds. The music industry is so over populated with factory produced garbage that the art of making music is becoming a dying art. So in order to help educate people on what 'good' music is, I've decided to start reviewing every cd I've come across.
